Southern Surf Stomp! presents Arrows Out (NC), MOONBASE (CD release), and 4th Ward Afro-Klezmer Orchestra

Yet another first for a stomp, with a CD release from my very own group, MOONBASE.  The band plays a progressive style of surf (if you can even call it that) that draws upon the past but pushes forward to the future.  Our debut, "Creation Myths", has been in the works for some time now (recorded by the Mystery Men's Jesse "Jay" Wallace Jr.), and we are excited to unleash it upon the world.

I first saw North Carolina's Arrows Out at Instro Summit 2013 and instantly fell in love.  They provide a dreamy, atmospheric soundtrack for the most beautiful indie film that doesn't exist.  While their twinkling melodies may be subtle, they captivate and surround you and will be in your head for days.

4th Ward Afro-Klezmer Orchestra is one of my favorite groups in town.  It can be quite difficult to describe the group so here is a description from their web site, "The 4th Ward Afro-Klezmer Orchestra is a nine-piece klezmer-funk-rock-jazz ensemble that performs original compositions and arrangements combining West African rhythms with Eastern European klezmer melodies. The 4WAKO boasts a roster of extraordinary veteran talent."

Southern Surf Stomp! presents Phatlynx (NC), Gemini XIII, and Air Wolves

North Carolina's Phatlynx are the ultimate southern fried homage to Link Wray...and the other white meat.  In reality they are so much more, cooking up styles from surf, rockabilly, and R&B.  Crispy Bess, the group's leader, is a rock legend of epic proportions having played with Southern Culture on the Skids, Uncle Tupelo, and Tiny Tim...yes, THAT Tiny Tim.  Bess is also the organizer and promoter for the world's largest instrumental music festival, the Instro Summit.

Gemini XIII are relative newcomers to the Atlanta surf scene although member Lester Dragstedt has played a big role in the punk world since the 80's with his band The Nightporters.  The group started primarily as a cover band but has since focused on some very strong originals.  I am a big fan and supporter of this group and see some great things in their future.

Air Wolves feature former members of the Love Drunks and Can Can, and play gritty garage punk a la the Stooges.  The Wolves recently released their debut CD recorded by our friend John Breedlove from Hip To Death.

Instro Summit 2014!

Instro Summit is THE largest surf/instrumental music festival in the world.  This year will be my third consecutive year attending/performing.  The event has become somewhat of a family reunion of sorts and many of the groups performing I am honored to call friends.  Crispy Bess, promoter, has really outdone himself this year bringing in 28 astounding acts from across the US.  Held at Motorco Music Hall in Durham, NC May 16-18, check out this forum on Surf Guitar 101 for more details.
